Are you in south central Idaho? Son and I will be bobtailing a truck from Hermiston Oregon to Salt Lake City on I84 then east on 80 to Iowa. What is the snow situation like in your area? I tried to talk him into going through Pocatello then east into Wyoming on 30, an old trusted route we took on the harvest In the summer but he is afraid of 30 because of snow. Whadda ya say?

I'm not S.V. I would go across US-30 long before I would pull all those hills to get across 84and 80 to Little America WY. I used to run across there all the time with over size and legal loads in the winter at any time of the winter. The power plant over off of 30 keeps the route open for the coal trucks unless they closed it since I have been through there in the last 3-4 years. Remember they close 80 over the sisters and up to Evanston WY a lot of times with bad weather. I've not run into that on 30. The worst part of 30 is in ID by the highway shed there. Some of the most beautiful scenery is across there.

Ww have no snow where i am but there is in Wyoming but im
not sure where it starts its supposed to warm up quite a bit the
next couple days . Im southeast of Pocatello

Thanks. I would sure like to take 30 since I am so familiar with the road. Once we are out of the mountains and make that last eastbound downhill grade we will be in open prairie. I have unpleasant memories about the Incom scale and Kemerer scale but they should be a breeze this time. Being bobtail maybe we can pull away from Laramie without overheating!!

I was hauling coal out of rock springs one night and the snow
and wind was so bad it took me 7 hours from little America to
kemmerer .

Thanks for the update. We harvested wheat in your neck of the woods. East of Fort Hall up about 8000 foot hanging over a cliff area in the reservation. No Iowa farmer can claim taking a combine up a miles long mountain road surrounded by boulders and trees like we did. And then going back down hoping the tranny doesnt pop out of gear. By Pocatello we had to drive through the police shooting range to get to one field.

Hey now, dont scare me! LOL

That road is not good when the weather is bad if i could have
stopped i would have but I couldn’t see anything . I remember
i had some grain one year on my uncle’s dry farm and i had to
carve a road out through the rocks trees and sage brush and
the combine had a long climb up a couple dug ways and
down through a couple deep revines to get there. It is scary
coming off those hills in a combine that’s for sure . When are
you coming

Hey fixerupper, your in my neck of the woods, I live just outside Hermiston,OR.5 miles N east.
If ya have time give me a shout..PH# 541-314-2446

fixerupper, by chance are you driving one of those white cab truck with the red box (looks like a potato bed). If so I watched ya go right by my place, headed North on county rd towards I-84

Keith I would love to stop to chat but my son is in a big toot to get right back home. Will be in a white 2007 Freightshaker semi tractor with a pusher axle. We are picking it up from a dealer sight unseen except for some pictures. Our biggest fear is the truck will be a dud and we will be flying back home.

Cummins we are flying out of Sioux Falls early this morning (tues). should be headed back home with the truck at about 5:00 pm Oregon time this afternoon IF the truck is represented right. If the deal falls flat we might end up living with Keith for awhile. Grin!

Go what ever way you chose but we have been in winter mode here a couple weeks now, (Wyoming) going through 30 in the winter with a bob tail truck would sure not be my first choice,, and I am a Native lol

I have never been in the area during winter. 80 sounds like a safer bet. Being bobtail we will have plenty of power in the mountains.

there is only two places that ya have have to worry about and The first one is Cabbage hill. You hit that one first east of
Pendleton,, One heck of a climb, The next one is Lad Canyon, which is between LaGrande and Baker City, that is the worst one this time of year.
Tell the seller you want a set of tire chains, chains or studded tires are required this time of year going over the mountain passes.

Thanks Keith. We are in Hermiston at the truck dealer waiting for them to do a little work on it. When we flew over from Denver the roads seemed to be clear in the hwy30-I80 area. its hard to tell from 36000 feet. All of Idaho looked like it was pretty clear of snow like SV said.

The dealer said its only an hour and a half longer going from Pocatello south on I15 to Salt Lake City rather than take 30.

Ya but you have to deal with all the idiots in and around Salt Lake City. Seems like every time I went thur Salt Lake, there was always construction, and seemed like all the crazy came out of the wood work.
Have a safe trip home. Should have called and Shawn and I would have met ya at the dealers. We were in town but that time.
