How to take apart

Got this spreader cheap. Gear box is
locked up. Kept it soaked down with Deep
Creep. Bolts wouldn't budge. Little heat,
no go. Finally tried a longer breaker
bar....... Yep broke them. Still won't
come off. What's holding it to the shaft?
Any insight will be appreciated.

If you are talking about that round plate, probably rust or a dowel pin or set screw. You may already know when a bolt won't turn, try tightening it just a little, very carefully. May take several tries. Sometimes they will come loose.

Does it still have the agitator fork on it? If it does you have to start in the tub and work your way out. I just scraped one like it (mine was red ) cause of a bad seal in the gear box. Good Luck.

Anytime you have two dissimilar metals, you can count on having a tough time getting them apart. In this case you have steel bolts in an aluminum casting. You might have to drill a pilot hole down through the bolts and then put your solvent into the casting, through the hole in the bolt. If you do not need this equipment any time soon, let it soak for a few months. Another thing to try is to hit the bolt heads with a hammer. Vibration might affect it some, but don't count on that either.

u broke those bolts for nothing. its is also a help to leave it mounted like that. look for a set screw and keyway. just pound it off with a long punch.

It looks like the round plate is held on by a keyway and key with a set screw. See if you can look at a parts book on line and see how that plate is attached.

Search "southwind spreader parts diagram. It's all there. There is an 8x40 mm pin in the gearbox vertical shaft. Gearbox is available for $130.
I found out the hard way using my seed spreader to broadcast fertilizer corroded up the auger and gears. If you use it to spread fertilizer, spend more time cleaning it than you did spreading with it.

well, at this point, can you get the gearbox and disk out of the frame and then split the geabox? You may have to actually drill down the center of the bolts to clearance diameter get them to clear those green flanges. Then you can take the disk and shaft to a press and probably press the shaft out of the disk.

It looks like a gearbox I rebuilt for a Skag mower once. It should split down the middle. One of the problems is that fertilizer usually is a catalyst for rust and other forms of corrosion.
