Hiring weekend help

Give me your pros and cons of hiring weekend help to do things around the house/yard.

Yes I know how to hire licensed bonded and insured companies.
But I am talking about a farm teen or a 25/30 yr old that does side jobs on the weekend.
Might even include the guys standing on the curb in front of the box hardware every morning.

This will all be supervised work where I just watch and pay them to do the labor some of which will be skilled labor.
I'm thinking $15 to $18 a hour should get me some help.

John,

I have two teenaged boys that I use to help with haying. They live about 200 yards down the road and I know their parents very well. Personally, I wouldn't trust anyone that I don't know and have a personal relationship with. There are so many untrustworthy people in the world today and it seems like they must be breeding.

I've had two things stolen from my barn. A motorcycle helmet and an electric, bench mount chain saw sharpener (it wasn't bolted down). In both cases, I'd had guys doing work on the farm. I couldn't prove who stole the stuff, but it sure seemed too coincidental that the thefts happened when they did. So, except for the two teenagers, I've not hired any temporary help for the past 8 or 10 years.

Your call. You know the local situation and I don't.

John...…before retiring to Lumberton Tx we lived 25 years in Spring. Had an unusually big yard with pine trees and oaks. In that area People of Mexican race line up in empty parking lots to hopefully obtain work. Now this was some time ago but I'd try to use them all day for $100 each. Usually hired two. Worked better for all really. Rake and bag neddles, wash the house from the grind ( single story ) etc. Use them in Lumbrton for turn key yard work. Cleaning flower beds, and have a grass cutting service. With my health issues I can't put this all on my bride of 44 years. Never had a single bad experience with hiring help out. None were/are wine-os. Hard workers just trying to feed their families and send their kids to school. Wingnut

I want no strangers casing out our place for a later acquisition. I hire one teen from church for haying and other occasional chores. Our Grandson continues to mow the yard. My wife and I do what needs to be done. Call me paranoid, but what I have I would like to keep. gobble

I can get pretty good day help around these parts (Middle Tenn) for $75 /$85 a day. Have several locals I can call the night before and line them up. I like to work two at a time seems we get more done.

Call your insurance broker and run it buy him. If you're not covered for workman's comp, you'll need coverage. If one of those guys gets hurt due to a cause not covered by W/C, you'll need liability coverage. Umbrellas are cheap.

Past few years I hired these guys from homeless Vet center. They have two years to live there to find a real job, then out. They have to sign in & out. Our local American Legion has always tried to help out. Small vet center can only accomadate 12 Men. Over the last 10 years, always had good luck with them.
