It looks like you and the lely did a good job . When I looked at the clods it made me think that they would really beat on you and the tractor. The older I get the more I notice taking a beating like that.

If I powdered my soils here up like that I would get bad compaction also at least as bad as I see there,, boy those look ugly,, glad you were able to get them broken down though,, I always laugh at those who think no-till drilling is the only thing for all areas to do,, its not as you know,, works fine where you get all the h20 you need,, but not every where is like that,, this is outside this morning we Finally got some good H20,, although this will only add up to a 1" maybe 1 1/2" total if we are lucky but dang Glad for what we did get,, we was as dry as you look before this

That might have been a rough ride.

We wouldn’t do anything tot hose, winter would mellow those out just fine for us. We prefer rough ground not smooth like you made it for over winter, rough ground doesn’t erode here.

Are you putting in a winter crop yet?

I use a no-till drill to conserve moisture in the spring. Plant into winter moisture instead of turning the soil and drying it out. Faster and saves moisture and time and fuel.

Yes and you get ten times the H20 I get here and different soil,, if I got half the moisture you get there I could throw seed on the ground and make a crop, like I said different areas different ways,, you think no till will work here come and show me been at this over 50 years also not my first rodeo,, I see it works for you it does not here no matter how many times you try to tell me it will,, you are comparing apples to a acorn nut between your area and mine

Going to drill Monday or Tuesday I can’t drill into clods that big that’s why i smoothed em out

The compaction comes from working to wet we had 6 inches of rain last fall I started ripping and then the rain hit and then o disked when it was still pretty wet .

I agree. Constantly working land down fine destroys soil structure. No-till works very well where summer fallowing was the norm 30 years ago. It saves moisture and preserves the soil. We still do some tillage on our farm on the SD/MN border, but we no longer plow things black. No-till won't work very well in wetter areas with lots of clay, but most of western SD went to no-till and they are producing much better crops because of it.

It was rough but my seat suspension works well and the tractor is heavy so it doesn’t bounce around much

We had about 2.5 inches in june and that was the last storm we seen up until now and we haven’t got any yet

Same here...been dry as a popcorn fart all summer. Corn and bean yields are down, but 10 miles away they have had 6-10 inches more rain this year than we have....and they have great yields.
