motor change on LN ford 700 truck

(quoted from post at 18:51:02 10/17/20) Does anyone know of a diesel engine that will fit in a 1970 ford LN 700 truck without a bunch of modifications.
y round about answer. I lowered a 7.3 IDI into my 1965 F-250. The oil cooler was on top of the right frame rail as was the starter on the left. My 1963 F-600 shares my 65's frame width as does the pickups through 1972. From what I have seen if the big truck uses the pickup cab it likely will be about the same width as that year of pickup. This is my reasoning, not gospel. I have seen a few Cummins drop into the Slick, Bump and Dent side pickup trucks. It seems reasonable to me that the Cummins would be a good fit for your LN.

LN series of trucks were 3208 equipped from factory. F series were
Cummins and Ford diesel built. Unless you really love this truck,
sell it and buy the diesel engine truck you need. MY .02

Detroit made a V8 I cant remember the size that should bolt in, replaced bigger gas motors. Those motors were known as oil leakers

I believe they came with Caterpillar 3208's and Detroit 6-71 2 strokes.I think there was a Cummins option as well, but not sure.

Well it would not be a direct drop in on a L N 700 and like others have said about your brakes as you have Juice brakes and not air so ya will have to add a vacuum pump and a reserve tank , Rear end gear ratio would need changed , larger rad would need to be fitted in . Most common engines on the 700's were the 330 Med duty the 360 Med. duty and once in a while a 390 Med . , now had that been a 50 series then the HD components would come into play and if it was a straight L you would have a longer nose . In the L N's with diesels they had the DOG house back into the cab . Don't get me wrong here there is still alot of room under the hoods. Back in those days when they were first out i went to school on the Louievilles . They were a lot easier to work on over the F and N series . 3208 and the 555 Cummins are a lot bigger block then the 6.9-73 as that block is close to the 429-460 . They 6.9-73 were a take off of the 404-44? i h GAS BLOCK . And any engine swap unless it is the same family is a chore to get it set in and located for proper drive line angle and proper cooling , then mating up heavier drive line . aon't nothing like twisting a drive shaft into a cork screw , having a transmission blow on a hill under load or wring and axle on a hill.

NOT in that size truck ya would have to go with a later model and they would be the L 7000 or 8000 and on the L N you would be in the 9000 for the big inline six , 6-71 or the NT 250 on up thru the NTC 400 . I can't remember all the stuff on them as the last i worked on them was like Sept of 1970 when i left being a Ford Tech and moved forward taking a job as a Parts manager at a Goat Store and had to deal with the Dodge line of big trucks .

Early L7000s used the 3208 Cat engine
The Detroit 8.2 was a pile of junk
6.6 and 7.8 Ford diesels were used in the 80s, but were replaced by the 5.9 or 8.3 Cummins in the 90s

That said converting a gas chassis to diesel is no easy task
Some apps require elevated cab mounts, dog house cut outs, throttle controls, clutch linkage, wiring, cylinder cooling system are all different. Gas trans and clutch housing wont work with diesel engine

Unless this truck has a lot of sentimental value to it (and swapping from gas to diesel takes the sentiment out of it), as EFV said, buy you a LN 700 truck that already has a diesel in it.
