Picked these four up today. They belonged to my friend Jeff who passed away last month.

Now I have to get the barn doors widened so I can get the pens cleaned. Working on that today. Also got enlisted to help load the last three big heifers at Jeff's as well, the owners know nothing about chasing cattle and have them so wild I'm not sure we will get them in the truck. Going to be interesting for sure.

Jon.... Asking because I may learn something ...but can calves and hogs be pinned together as shown and for how long? Wingnut

They took right to eating grain and hay. That's good. Don't anybody get hurt loading them big ones. It ain't worth it. Figure out a different way.

They used to run them together in the old days. In this case they are separate except the large pig that is leaving tomorrow. They used to run hogs in the cattle and the hogs are the cow manure for the feed value left over.

Hi Jon. The calves look great. I see you got a case skid loader recently too. You’re going to love it. Is the skid loader a gas engine? Sorry to read of your friends recent passing away. That has to be difficult. Thank you for the pics.

Congrats Jon. The coming of a new herd signals the changing of the seasons on the farm. That pig can go in the freezer with the trimmings separate for sausage after the deer harvest. You could also get those hams smoked out east with some “corner guy cure”.

Is there any better way to be "feed efficient" when feeding out "fats" than running a few hogs behind the cattle?

They do better inside, but mostly to keep the barn warm. Going to be getting more soon too. Would like another 4 or so like that then thinking about bottle calves, maybe one a month. Wife says she will feed them. We will see how that goes tho. Going to get More pigs too. Would like to get to where I can sell 10 pigs a month and one steer. That would utilize the farm about right. Got work to do on the barn first tho, those gutters need to be filled in so I can clean with the new skid loader.

As disgusting as that sounds, I always understood the rational of running some feeders behind the calfs on feed. gobble

hey Jon you got the stntions nd gutters, I think you should get rid of those pigs & steers & get your self some milk cows.. You could relly lose money then

Did you ever notice the hogs seemed to do better than the feeders, but when the hogs were gone that's when the feeders would gain. Think about it, what's the first thing a feeder does when it gets up. Damn pigs bother and worry the calves to get a fresh treat that's why they do better when the hogs are gone.
