Bushel Weight Again

I finally got around to comparing the two different methods of leveling grain in the measuring cup when establishing bushel weight. Not surprisingly the "scrape"
method produced a lighter weight than my rolling and packing method. Recorded on video for future reference.
Measuring Grain

The roller method was never used in the U.States,i bet i have been in 10 different buying station's,when their buying 400 loads a day, they don't or would not use the roller method!!

Elevator has to make it’s profit somehow. If it means skinning the farmers a smidgen on each bushel of grain, oh well! Farming, buy retail, sell wholesale, and pay the cost of trucking both ways. And all weights and volumes are measured on their scales.

The scrape method might even have tested lighter if you had emptied the cup before you filled it up again. You just kept the rolled grain in it and then overfilled it. I am thinking the rolling might have compressed the grain a bit down in the cup.

If you look at the 2:34 mark in the video I empty the scale contents into the cup, then throw another handful on to over fill it. Then scrape. I'm sure a cleaned sample would have given a more accurate test. But really its been a long time since I've seen a grain buyer even measure bushel weight.

I have been told the proper way to scrape is to slide sideways three times while scraping. Right left right as you cross the cup. That will eliminate the pocket you got.

To get even more consistent measurements, a funnel with a sliding gate at the bottom is used to fill the measuring cup. It sits up on legs a specific height above the cup. I agree with JonF that you swipe the leveling stick back and forth 3 passes as you level.

(quoted from post at 14:31:06 10/14/20) Enjoyed your venture into the scientific. Professor Roosty s laboratory. Aren t you renewing the plates on the Mercury ?
I only license the Merc for the snow free part of the year. So May to end of October. I don't plan to go very far from home with it once the snow hits. Next May hopefully.

That would be the Cox funnel they refer to in the Canadian Grain Commision website. The results of their test weight procedure on my wheat came up with 391 grams. Of course it was likely a clean sample. Mine was straight from the combine so it had a few "whitecaps" in it to lighten it up.
