I was looking for these the last time I posted about the Gehl forage harvesters. Don't recall if I posted them before.

Enjoy!!

The harvester in the second picture reminds me of pictures I have seen from Europe, were they build forage harvesters that mount on a tractors front 3pth. It makes prefect sense to me to use the 200hp tractor that a farmer might already have to chop his silage. Rather than get another machine. With a Kemper style head, staying on the rows would be no problem

I was at a farm in the 70's where they had a 1066 on behind a Gehl,(800)the wheels on the chopper were tied on the front axle of the tractor. The drive line went under the tractor to power the chopper. The spout went over the top of the cab. I have never seen one since.

Probably homemade. I remember seeing something similar in the pages of Farm Show magazine.

I'll bet that one would be bearcat to steer. And totally worthless in mud.I think I remember reading somewhere that was the first attemt at a selfpropelled chopper.

Stuck in the mud was a big issue with those with that big ol' corn head on it. That's why they changed up to the wheel configuration that mine has, in the middle of the trio. It was the first SP.... far as I recall.

The first SP chopper came out in
the mid 40s. It was a home made
unit. Gehl worked with the
developer to create the small
one you see in the picture.
There are details out there,
somewhere on the 'net. I'll look
later.

Gehl had a unit mounted to the front of a 1086 that sat across from the "new" building for a number of years. It was a production unit. There weren't too many made. Been on the lookout for one of those as well as the front mounted merger. I'll post back this evening with more info.

My neighbor was a great tinkerer, he bought an old two row chopper and converted it to 3pt, hung it off the back of the tractor and backed through the field, pulled the wagon on the front of the tractor. He used it to open fields.

That pull type with a LeRoi engine was our first chopper. We used the Ford Jubilee with the front bumper to pull it chopping hay and a larger tractor for corn silage.

Wow!! those pics bring back memories/nightmares.. the ford pulling the FH.. I remember using an 8N to pull a FH82.. At times the tail wagged the dog..

Thanks for the wonderful pics and a blast from the past..
