Skid steer hydraulic fittings

I borrowed the neighbors skid steer with pincher to pull out bushes and saplings. It works fine for that, but the hoses for the pincher get caught in the bushes and tear things up. It was an expensive weekend replacing tubes and fittings. I would have thought they were breakaway, but appear not to be. Has anyone else had trouble with them?

They are the work of the devil. Why skid steer manufacturers decided on that design to be the universal design is beyond me. They frequently fail internally with torn o-rings etc that cannot be replaced. They don't couple well if there is any kind of pressure behind them. I usually am cursing them when ever I need to use them, and wish there was a better alternative.

One of the worst designs I have seen.

I think I am into 700 bucks of fittings and tubes this weekend.

Speaking of poor design, try unscrewing the gland out of the lift cylinder to replace the main seal. Aluminum gland in a steel cylinder sleeve. Dissimilar metals seem to weld themselves together. Thanks bobcat engineers! Spanner wrench won't touch it. Pipe wrench and a cheater pipe destroys the gland. (Only 1/4 inch grip area) New part 200 bucks. Heat didn't help.

Machine a set of pipe wrench jaws down to 1/4 to 3/8 wide for those stubborn glands.

I do quite a few cylinders and got tired of trying to keep a pipe wrench on them one sided, after the spanner failed to work, so that's what we did.

You'd be amazed how well the pipe wrench works when you can keep the jaws centered over the width of the gland, rather than off to one side.

work of the devil is correct! The EPA should ban them for pollution due to leakage. Dealer said was my fault for not cleaning dirt and not pushing straight in,,, BS! I had brand new ones that leaked from day one. I finally threw it all away and replaced with standard ISO tractor couplers. Two years of no leaks and paid for in saved hydraulic fluid. I made up a set of ISO to flat face adapters so I can rent an attachment if needed.

Stucchi makes a flat face couple that will connect under pressure and break-away. The also can provide a Hydraulic block to replace the one that comes standard on most skid steers

David my neighbor has a tree trimming business and has ripped them off more than a few times. His is a Bobcat with aftermarket grapple. His problem is when he tilts it back to far it can break the fitting. I helped last Friday on a Case 330 Tracsteer with a blown hose. That’s a fun one too had to pull track and drive motor.
