i have an I H 856 that the PTO suddenly stopped working. I finished my round baling on Friday, did some brush hogging on Saturday. went to put my Hay Tedder away for the winter today and when i went to hook up the PTO, the splines didn't line up, so i threw the the lever to spin the PTO shaft and there was nothing.
Any ides ?

actually i even topped it off before i round baled was only a little low maybe 2 qts. very weird as there was not even any sign of any issues

On the bottom under where the valve stem is there is a plug. Take it out and drop the valve out. Probably has the broken pin in the stem. If it is it will come out in 2 pieces. Put a new pin in and put back in. There is a hole in the lever mount bracket on the side about halfway up. You will need the special fitting and a line to connect the gage and fitting. then with running and warmed up check your pressure. Should be around 250ish If i remember right. There is a lower pressure for a start up. I never could make that part work well in the adjustment. there is a hole on the stem under the lever connection for a punch or nail. Turn it one way to increase pressure and the other to reduce it. If this doen't get you going then you will beed to pull the unit out to check the intake screen. Be careful no to brake it off removing it. With a hoist or some kind of lift to hang it on pull it back as you tip the front up. Will need to drain some oil or set facing downhill.

Here is diagram of PTO valve. Item #27 is the tiny pin that can break . It connects item 26 and item 25. If I need to replace the broken pin, I have used a needle roller from the cross and bearing cup of a pto U-joint as a pin. Just grind it to length as needed . Better than the $$$ Case IH will charge for one.

so today i went out again to look at it. it did not turn, waited a few minutes, tried it again and it worked. even went and did some brush hogging with no issuse. do not know what to think now, no funny sounds, no slipping. worked fine even in heavy brush

Run it 5 gallons (yes) over full. A little low, or a hill and a suction line will find vacuum at a faulty Oring, or pipe. Jim
