John Deere 3010 Starting problem

I have a John deere 3010 and i am trying to identify a part. This tractor has a 24v system and I am having trouble starting up the tractor. The part that connects between the starter solenoid and the ignition switch is what I am trying to find out how to replace. I have looked all over without success, any help would be appreciated.

I want to change my story.

The starter solenoid is pulled in from the neutral safety switch, then the push button, then up to the ignition switch.

What are the symptoms?

Hello and welcome to the site.

Lots of help here from many knowledgeable people.

Solenoid switch sounds what you are looking to replace. Sometime also called the starter
switch. If it is, it should have two big terminals on it's opposite sides. One of two
small terminals,

Guido.

Guido,

There should be several things between the starter and the ignition switch.

It depends on the symptoms which ones they are.

Not quite sure what you've got going on, any more info you can post will help us help you.

As to parts lookup, https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/.

I wonder if you're referring to a AR47710 circuit breaker? These CB were added by dealer tech's to some tractor wiring harnesses to help prevent electrical fires. Another added device to help aid starter engagement was a large relay which is part # RE164448 .

Garret, you have come here seeking help from many people with a lot of knowledge. Why not allow them to really help you by first sharing why you have decided to replace this part?

AR47710 is a little more complicated to locate in JD parts catalog that normally because to my knowledge there is no photo in PC of that circuit breaker.

This item as was noted is a safety retrofit and will not show up in the original parts diagram. That part is unlikely to be your problem. It is a simple circuit breaker. It is a normally closed device which I believe in normal operation (just setting there) will show 12 volts to the tractor frame on both sides or zero ohms if you remove the wires and test it. Trouble shooting the solenoid on a 24 volt system is a little different process. The first thing to do is to make absolutely sure the tractor is in park. Checking the solenoid starting circuit with reference to the tractor frame will give you confusing results. I would thourly check the neutral safety switch, remove the connector and check for zero ohms. I would also remove the solenoid from the starter, dissemble it and inspect the contacts. If it is old or has been run with low batteries I might replace it. I know it costs around a $100.00 but if it welds itself internally when starting you may ruin the starter before you can disconnect the batteries. With all that said poor starting in a 24 volt system is usually batteries and/or connections. Take forum advice from individuals who understand the system, it is different. Tx Jim is a good source.

Thank you for your compliment BUT there are several other regular members of this discussion forum that are equal or better informed about the JD 24 volt electrical system than I.

Before I spent $100 on a 24 volt starter solenoid I would seriously entertain the thought of changing the 24 volt system to 12 volt system utilizing a 12 V Delco alternator & 12 V starter.

Thank you for all of your help. I have spent hrs researching what the best option is and i have come across multiple threads of people saying the the 24v system is best to keep if you know what your doing and to keep it the way it is and I have read multiple threads saying to changing it over to a 12v system is the best way to go. My tractor is cranking with a strange noise but only when i charge the tractor. I was scouring the internet trying to find this specific component that no one else had. I was going to keep the 24v system since it always cranked well but i was going to change out the brushes on my starter and replace the solenoid, I was also going to replace the circuit breaker that i am so happy to have found thanks to Jim. But i didn't even know the purpose of this device. This is the first time ive ever used a forum so thank you for your patience. I did sign up to another forum as well posting the same question. I will not do that again.

My mistake.... I never heard of 24v. On tractor until
i looked it up ... have you checked all connections?
Probably you have
Have you checked feed to activate solenoid?
Could there be bad contact between solenoid and
starter body?

Yes Sir, Charge the batteries on the tractor. The weird noises and lack of starting capacity has gotten worse over the past several months. Clicking noises and and screeching noises are getting louder. The batteries drain down everytime i get off the tractor.

I would first try to track the battery drain problem down. With everything shut off, check for voltage between various connections and the battery ground. if you find voltage you have found a leak.

Hello David G,

Yep and long distance guessing with little info makes it so much fun,

Guido.

I want to thank everyone who gave advice. I really appreciate it. I installed a new solenoid and put cleaned out and put new brushes inside the starter and it cranked right up without any weird noises. Yay. First time doing this sort of repair. Thanks again everyone.
