I guess I bought another mans problems- thats ok Ill get it with your help! lol...Previous owner put on a 12v alternator...- tractor has an "amp" gauge on dash and showed "0" when running also battery showed 12.4v running; so I changed the alternator- same thing now. 62a Delco Alt- has that 2-wire plug on top and someone put a single jumper from outside post(of 2 wire plug) to hot post on back of alternator...is this right? When I use my Volt Meter on alternator (when running) it show it is not charging...what a mess. Any ideas? also volt meter jumps all over the place when hooked to battery and running... Thanks!

You don't have a mess!

This is easy.

The wire from the BAT post on back of the alternator should be jumped to terminal #2.

The main BAT post is connected to the amp meter. One side of the amp meter goes directly to the battery, usually connected to the starter switch. Everything else (including the alternator) goes on the other amp meter post.

There is a missing wire. It may have fallen off, so look for it possibly hanging in the vicinity.

If not, it needs another wire run from the ignition side of the ignition switch, seriesed through a small indicator type incandescent lamp, connected to terminal #1. You will need a 2 wire socket, not a grounded base socket.

If there is not a harness plug on the alternator, it needs one to keep the wires in place and on the correct terminals. The plug with pigtails can be bought at any auto supply.

Steve...always good to hear from you; I took the battery out and it is a bit of a mess! Nothing hooked to amp gauge- the small white wire going to on/off switch is running to back of Alternator! The other 10g wires have been cut...except for one which goes to the voltage-drop to start engine. I wonder where the big black one goes? It and the green one are cut off under tank also...gezzz...thanks for helping :)

2 wire plug has a #1 and #2 on the alternator. The #2 wire does go to the charge stud and the #1 wire goes to the ignition switch the same side as the coil wire is hooked to. The #1 wire is the excite wire which turns on the alternator so it will charge

OK, it is a bit of a mess... LOL

What would you like to do? Do you want to do a full rewire, or just get it running and charging?

If you just need it running, start by tracing the existing wires. If any that are cut off are still connected on the other end, they need to be disconnected so they don't short out against anything. They can stay, just disconnect them for now.

The alternator wire going to the on/off switch, it needs to be removed.

Run a 10 gauge wire from the BAT terminal on back of the alternator to the battery cable side of the starter solenoid or contactor, which ever it has.

Get a harness plug that fits the side terminals of the alternator.

Connect the red harness wire (#2) to the BAT post on back of the alternator, doubled up under the 10 gauge wire you ran to the battery cable.

The white wire (#1) will go through the indicator lamp I mentioned above, to an ignition source, either the back of the ignition switch, or the wire that feeds the coil, which ever is easiest. The indicator light is simply being used as a resistor. If you want to have it visible as a charge indicator, you can put it through a hole in the dash, or somewhere visible. Or just tape up out of sight, it will serve the same purpose.

That should get it charging and you say it already runs and cranks, so as long as those circuits are intact it should be good to go.

When you get ready to rewire it, it will be easier to make your own wiring harness. If you buy one, it will come set up for a generator, and will have a lot of unused circuits.

You can do this, one wire at a time!

Steve...I will run a 10g wire from Alternator to starter button..it already has a 10g wire going from starter to on/off switch; but what about amp gauge? Thanks:)
