Still at making firewood

Well, the end for this year is in sight. I set a goal to have a total of 30 cord (3840 cu.ft.) of firewood stacked into my woodshed at the end of this summer. My helper Dustin and I made the next to last load this afternoon. There are enough logs blocked at the landing to make the last load.=======When I built the elevator, I made a wide hopper at the bottom, but it was prone to the splits bridging and not feeding up the elevator on occasions. The last couple days,I revamped the hopper to what is in the first pic. It is a vast improvement over the original design. The splits align themselves with the chain and feed much better. If I had it to do over I would build a flat bed conveyor with paddles rather than a V style.

Headed to the woods and landing where I skidded and blocked logs and tops.

We got set up and it took us about 2-1/2 hrs. to make the 1-1/4 cord load.

All loaded up and headed for home..

All home and parked next to the 830 with the big trailer loaded. Dustin was home in time to go to his grandfather's and watch football for the afternoon. The wifey and I will go up and make the last load this week, while Dustin is in school. Luckly, school is open to in-class studies. Many surrounding schools have had to revert back to remote learning with students or staff showing positive for CV19.----------------------------Loren

I been making modifications to my splitter this afternoon.
Won't take long to finish now.
Then it is spitting time.

30 full cords- that’s a good amount of wood. How much do you use in a average winter?. It’s a nice feeling to be done whether it’s the last load of wood, hay etc. With the recent rain you might get some fall plowing done yet. (We will be standing by for updates/pics).

I burn 12-14 cord per year. I'm well on my way to being 74 and for some reason making firewood gets a little more tiring than it used to. My processing equipment saves me a lot of work, but I still have to fell and drag logs to a landing and then block them, and then I still have to stack it all. The extra wood is my reserve for when I can't cut wood, and my woodshed is totally enclosed so weather won't affect it.======= We have gotten just over 2" of rain in the past week, so I will try plowing again tomorrow.-------------Loren

Greg, Yes once in a while, but he doesn't do a lot on his website anymore.========Yes there is a chill in the air. The wifey has lit the fireplace several times already this fall.-----------------Loren

They are both 430s. The 431 on the splitter is a row crop tractor. The other tractor on the trailer is a 440 utility. They have different front axles, plus the home built 2 post canopy and cab make them look different from a Plain Jane 430.---------------Loren

Loren KOO has written a book mostly about his wasted youth. His words and he is on book face. I ran across him when he posted photos of his Linn tractors. He’s talked about his fifteen seconds of fame on Ice Road truckers. Just remembered you mentioning KOO on here years ago.

Good Evening Loren
Liked your Post & Pictures . liked your ability to engineer & fabricating the tools
you need to make the task a lot easier for the hard work needed . You make the younger guys look bad. Enjoy the heat this winter .

I've been reading his stories about his youth that he has been writing. Very interesting-at least to me-about how he grew up, pretty self sufficient, very independent. Sounds like he had a fun girl friend too! Mark.

i use to do all that work and time to but found out in the end was not money saver and had better things to do with my time . nowdays i just turn on the geo system. i used to haul it in with old wagons and just back into shed and dumped it. but admire your effort yet, but sounds like its starting to be more work for ya. we are doing the grandkids here on schooling thru the computor not attending schools. its getting worse here also

I built the trailers that way so all the weight was not on the trailer axle and tires. Also the hinge point for the dump is close to rear so tail stays at waist height for picking splits off the tailgate. --------------------------Loren
