I drove thru a online auction lot today and saw an old case tractor that had a detroit engine in it. The
blower was on the right side vs. being on the left like oliver, I suppose it was to make it fit better.

Was it a LA case, you think, they put a lot of 4-53 in them, but never noticed what side the blower was on, did u get a picture?

Case never put a single Detroit in any of their tractors,, there was a kit from Detroit Dsl to do it though,, "L"/LA were equipped with them before CASE brought out the 500 dsl in 1953, some guys wanted twice the HP though and I have seen them installed in 500/600 models also, while they could be set to produce more HP than the factory 500/600, they turned almost twice the rpms and had a very short power band compared tot he Case engines, not to mention they were 2-4 times Louder,, and needed over hauled far more often

If the story I read is true Deere put a Detroit in a LA to find out how a two wheel drive tractor will handle 100 horses. The LA was chosen because it had a strong power train. I saw a LA with a Detroit on a farm by Sterling Colorado. A machine shop in Denver did the conversion.

JD ran that Case LA Detroit engine not to far from me. JD not only used it to see if you can run 100 hp through a 2 wheel drive tractor. They used it to test against 4 wheel drive tractors and notably the Wagner TR9. You see they ran it against a Wagner TR 9 which had the
same horsepower as the LA. Both tractors pulled 24ft cultivators. On flat ground there was no difference between the two tractors. However, the guy running the Wagner turned and went up a hill. The Case tried to do the same thing and it just spun out and fell off the hill.
As a result JD started development on 4 wheel drive tractors culminating with the 8010/20.

yep, and the olivers with them at the antique tractor pulls proves that they need their RPM or they soon fall on their face.

some do not understand when we post I have found through the years if things are not made clear they will accept what they pull from it as fact,, I should have added a few more words to my post to clarify what I was meaning,, I cant count the times a person has comment done on my CASE fb page about something they took as fact when it was their interpreting it by how it was worded or lack of explanation to them which so many of us just already know and fill in the blanks,, I knew 100% what you meant,, others will read into it that CASE installed them as they read the "They" as CASE and not the owners per say on the conversion,

I know a guy west of Saginaw that put a inline 6-71 on the front of a LA would probably pull fine till it met a hill. The reason they were called hill sniffers. Double breasted Yamaha's for the V models and screaming jimmys and such. Put cardboard over the headlights so it would not see the hill.

I knew a guy in Belle Plaine KS that put a screamer in an L Case.
Then I think he moved back out to the farm in Udall, a few miles out in the country.
Went there and picked up 3 tractors from him.
