Older JD 850

I have a 1979 JD 850; after running for about 30 minutes to oil pressure light gradually begins to glow. Plenty of oil. If I turn it off it acts like the battery is dead. if I let it sit for about 5-10 minutes it will start. Any ideas??

Sounds like you have an electrical issue rather than an actual physical issue of the engine lacking lube oil flow.

Any more details you can add to help the responders to this thread figure out what's actually going on?

How many hours ? What viscosity motor oil ? What is the actual oil pressure when measured with an accurate known mechanical test gauge ? What is the voltage across the starter while cranking ?

Poor connection in the instrument wiring...getting warm, then sends current
somewhere lower in resistance, like the oil pressure light. Once it cools down, all
is normal again.

I agree with what the guys said below,it sounds like it's an electrical problem, and most likely not at all involved with the
engine.Check all the wiring for the low oil sensor and gauge. There might be a dead short somewhere.

It sound similar to what I have seen happen to early 6000 series tractors when the fuel filter bracket would break. ???? you are
saying? The bracket hardware was where the ground strap from the engine to frame connected and when the connection was lost the
coolant temperature gauge would become the path for ground and peg the needle. I would look for a failed ground cable. To be safe
though installing a master gauge into the oil pressure port would be a good idea.
