SHIPPING A TRACTOR GAS TANK

The only legal way to ship it is to have it cleaned and certified vapor free or ship it by LTL freight and claim it as hazardous materials.
USPS will not touch it and you need a account with UPS for them to ship hazardous shipments for you.

Or you could just wing it like some suggest and hope for the best.
But be forewarned.....
The fines for not claiming a shipment is hazardous are very large.

Fedex is always cheaper and faster IME.

Just this Last week I bought two items from the same town in NJ. Different sellers, one shipped Fedex, the other shipped UPS. Both packaged and pickup of on the same day.

Fedex arrived Monday morning, UPS on Wednesday at 7pm.
Also, I've had experience with shipping damage insurance claims with both. Fedex has never failed to be fair. Ups has always failed.

DEPENDS UPON YOUR INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCE. I NO LONGER USE FED EX DUE TO SOME DELIVERY MISTAKES. UPS HAS STARTED ON THE SAME ROAD. PRICE IS ALSO A FACTOR ON THE OUTBOUND. USPS THE CARRIERS KNOW ME AND I HAVEN'T HAD A PROBLEM......YET. I SUPPOSE PRICE WOULD BE THE BIGGEST FACTOR ON OUTBOUND.KEEP THAT TRACKING NUMBER.

I shipped one a few years ago and just labeled it antique tractor parts.
It was a Fordson tank.
No problem with UPS at that time.

I wonder if they run packages through a hydrocarbon detector now after 911.

My chain saw came marked with stickers of contained hydrocarbon, but there was no smell.

Could try the hauling board on the left. Might find somebody going that way to take it with less hassle and better shipping conditions.

UPS. I hate Fedex. The drivers change every day and they can't find their way out of a paper bag. Endless delays and poor and inaccurate tracking. Fedex trucks look like they're demolition derby rejects. I've had the same UPS driver for 15 years and she can find me every time.

What is hazard about an empty tank, if cleaned properly?

Must be different in La. Any pressurized tank like lp gas or those small propane cylinders are hazard but we ship new and used fuel tanks several time a year , both lawn mowers and tractors. Long as they are perfectly clean they just become used parts class 70 , ups or fed-ex no problem. Parts orders come in by ups or fed ex with new ones fairly regular.

Yes they scan for hydrocarbons- I got an education from a friendly UPS Center counter guy, who loved all the hot rod stuff I was shipping and receiving. I had to ship a toploader 4-spd, built a solid crate for it, and asked him before I brought it in, he said make sure you get all the oil out of it. You can imagine how much fun it is to get all the 90 wt out of a 4spd. Also put it in a plastic engine bag and sealed well with duct tape, went thru with no problems. I have since shipped another one the same way
