OT Truck Engine Worth

I realize this is quite a ways OT, but I also know there are some pretty sharp diesel guys here as well. Long story short, I have a friend who lost her Father early this year. She is trying to sell things off to settle the estate. She has this truck engine (possibly a tractor) that was supposedly a re-man engine. Said her Dad had told her he paid $4000 for it.

Does anyone know what to value it at? Will it fit any tractors? Thanks in advance - Bob

I can't help with the value, but the Versatile 500 tractor used the Cummins V-504. I think it's the only model to use it though.

Going to be a very limited number of folks interested in that v series Cummins. Not one of there most poplar engines. Not putting any essence on her statement of being rebuilt, just a v 504 engine I would think any thing over $2000.00 would certainly be a good offer but then if you could find that one guy that just has to have it certainly would be worth more but again not very likely. Just my thinking.

If it was cummins rebuilt it will say recon on the tag. There are not many of the small v engines left running as parts are scarce. Most were removed and repowerd by B and C series engines. I am sure its been 35 at least since they were made, it big brother tbe v903 is still in production.

4520 do you think that engine could be made into a 555 by maybe larger pistons or different crank. I know a guy that has a old clark /michigan loader that needs a v 555 . Just wondering.

if my memory is correct the block is the same so guessing a crank and cylinder kit is the only difference. I do some checking this morning but must of the people that worked on that project are retired by now. You might be better off putting a B out of an old bus in it.

The 504 had a bore/stroke of 4.625x3.75. The 903 has 5.5 bore and 4.75 stroke. Pretty sure blocks are different. The 903 is a much larger (length/width/height) engine. And weighs about 5-600 pounds more.

The V378, 504, 555 all had same bore with different stroke.

Looks clean enough for the story behind it to be possible.

Still lots of applications for it;

-Graders
-Generators
-Compressors
-Forklifts
-Trucks
-Pumps
-Boats
-Cranes

Good running used ones selling for $2000-$5000 from what I see online.

Probably not going to be a quick sell if your trying to get top dollar for it, at auction it might bring $1000 depending on the crowd, I would probably take a chance on it at that price but would expect to sit on it for a year or two until I found the right buyer.

Guessing the cost for a proper rebuild would be in the $10 000+ range so if it is in fact is a rebuilt engine it definitely has some value.

Any documentation to support what was done to it would be a big plus.

Maybe an old friend or neighbor of his may be able to provide some more information about it.

Another option may be to have an engine builder go through it and reseal it, going to cost some money but it would be a lot more appealing to a buyer than someone saying I think it was rebuilt.
