POWER STEERING

Can we make this work?? How does the electric steering work on the new automobile. How about on our older tractors ,cars and trucks ?

Thanks to arthritis in my wrists and hands I have been wondering if it would be feasible to adapt it to my 35 Ferguson using two electric tongue jacks mounted horizontally on the radius arms and attached to the steering arms (one pushing, one pulling) and using a joy stick to steer. Crazy? Maybe. TDF

An electric over hydraulic power pack with with a 2 way cylinder would work like used on something like a hydraulic tailgate.I have a couple with a push button control, can get them wireless too. A unit the goes in the steering column would be more handy.Angle on snow plows work the way you described.

The electric steering can be adapted to the old manual steer tractors.

But, as far as it being used on a working tractor, depends on how robust the steering gear is. Over time it will destroy the inner works of the gear as it is placing way more stress on the gear than it was ever intended to have, even when it was young and healthy.

For a parade tractor, sure, it will make life easier. The unit is somewhat bulky, so it won't be neatly hidden. And it will consume a good bit of battery, not practical with a generator. But starting with a fully charged battery, it will likely get you through a day of intermittent use.

I have done several of these conversions. I posted pictures of the one I did on my 8N and it touched off a whole page of arguments from how great it was to it causing the end of the world. So here we go again; it won't wear out the steering box any more than using muscle power to horse your tractor around and it uses virtually no electrical power going straight ( my charging system hasn't gone China Syndrome and there is hardly an increase in charging amps after a heavy turn). You may notice that you'll get the most detailed Doomsday advice from those who have never done a conversion. Let the battles begin.

That looks good to me.Where do you get the units? And as you point out I can't see how it'd put anymore wear and tear on the steering box than manual steering. What ruins most steering gears is lack of grease in the box and the rest of the steering assembly.

I find most of the components on Ebay. Usually a drive unit and controller can be had for around $150

I think its more like folks crunching all sorts of calculus equations telling me how it won't work. Kind of like the same ones who've been telling me that bumble bees can't fly.

I"m with JF in MI.
I have well over 100 hours on my EPS equipped 8N w/loader with full or empty bucket without a problem. Google epowersteering.com.
