ATT dieseltech-1660 combine fuel pump

My bil has a 1660 CIH combine with a Dt466 with the rotary fuel pump. While idling yesterday, it died. No restart. The primer/transfer pump on the rear of the injection pump would not pump-in fact it acted as if it was in a vacuum: when you pulled the plunger handle up, it sucked back down. Pulled the inlet line off and still in a vacuum. Pulled the check valve and it seemed stuck, but it did loosen and fall out. It had a little varnish on its side so we sanded it off and reinstalled it. With lines still off the pump handle still is in a vacuum and there is no suction at all on the inlet side. If I loosen the the check valve cap, it acts like it would pump, I felt outlet pulses, but I still could not feel any suction on the inlet fitting-probably sucking around the check valve cap. I cannot tell, but it looks like there was a seal on one the bolts that holds the transfer pump on; actually I am not sure the transfer pump is serviceable/removeable. So my question is where do we go from here? Thanks for any and all help, Mark.

Have you removed lines/filters/whatever, to determine there is flow from the tank? My later 1660 with Cummins has a "lift" pump powered off the camshaft which also is the hand primer pump. I have replaced it, and it still doesn't supply enough fuel to keep the injector pump happy. Maybe that's because a prior owner installed an electric pump down on the side of the machine, near the primary filter, and the original pump has to draw through the electric pump? [Sometimes when I'm working on the combine I unplug the electric pump so I don't have to listen to it grinding.] I have had the line coming from the tank to the primary filter block up. It's impossible to get at, so I blow back through from the filter, and that fixes it. I have even attached a fitting at one of the extra ports on the filter base so I can blow back through easily.

The lines are clear and the filters had less than 1hr of run time. The secondary/last filter was low when I removed it and when I refilled it after cleaning the check valve, the engine started and ran for a bit, then died again. There is is no suction at the primer pump inlet. I was actually considering an electric lift pump, but want to know more about the primer/transfer pump; whether it is repairable or what else can be checked. Thanks, Mark.

The Ambac M100 supply pump assembly has four check valves, two internal and one each at inlet and outlet ports. When the hand primer does not work then one of the internal valves is not right. I can repair it, or I have another assembly if it can't be repaired and needs replaced. Common problem is the primer leaks, but I always reseal them when I have the injection pump apart.

Can the primer pump be removed without removing the injection pump? Will anything fall out of the injection pump if it is removed? I looked a little bit for info on the Ambac pump, but did not find any useful info/parts breakdown. Thanks, Mark.

Yes, it can be removed after removing the three bolts. When going back on it's best to remove the top cover so the large low idle spring can be held up though so it gets centered in the cup washer.

I am guessing then, that the pump would need repaired or replaced-that there is not any thing I can do to it without parts or special tools. Would there be any harm in putting an electric lift pump in the system, after the water separator and before the main filters on the side of the engine? Just thinking out loud- Thanks, Mark.

Well after more searching I found a manual for the pump. What I had out was the regulator valve, and now I see where the check valves are. Would you recommend rebuilding the whole pump or just replace the primer pump? Combine has 4100hrs on it and runs well. Thanks, Mark.
