John Deere 4010 diesel

A few weeks ago , on this site, I was given excellent information on why my 4010 diesel quite suddenly began starting poorly. As the fuel level gets to 1/3 or so this started.... Would replacing the lift pump fix this problem?? [Thank you to the man who alerted me to this!!!]

Could be one or more of several things. Filters need changing, bad low pressure pump, pinch in line or dirt in tank partially plugging line at tank. return plugging.

Might be the injection pump needs repair too. Have you noticed any slight up/down speed change without moving the hand throttle? That could be fuel supply trouble as mentioned, or governor issues. Also be aware there are several diesel engines with Stanadyne/Roosa pumps that work fine without a supply pump feeding the filters/injection pump. If engine acts up, loosen the two screw timing cover on the pump side. If engine then runs OK WITH the fuel leak, but slows/dies with cover tight it's confirmed injection pump needs repair and return line back to fuel tank cleaned.

The reason I called some advice that I got last week "excellent" is that my fuel level was indeed down to 1/3 or 1/4 or so . When I filled up the tank , the 4010 started like my car . Instantly like it always did. So I.m back to thinking that I have a weak lift pump ??
