John Deere 2640 with Reverser Hydraulic Chatter

Hello everyone. I've got a 1977 2640 with shuttle shift forward reverser. I've changed the hydraulic filter and sump screen but upon start up, I loose power steering temporarily until the main pump catches up. Also, the 3 point and loader chatter when raising up. As the tractor warms up the chatter somewhat goes away but not completely... I read that on non-reverser tractors that there is a check valve in the main pump line that prevents oil from returning to the transmission pump when the tractor is off. That allows the main pump to have a supply of oil on demand. Since my tractor has a reverser, I don't think that the main line running into the reverser control valve has this check valve? I pulled both of the oil lines off of the reverser and neither one of them had a check valve in the line like the non-reverser tractors have. So, for reverser tractors, what keeps the oil from draining back into the transmission and cavitating the main pump upon startup? Also, any advice on how to stop the chatter would be great! I know that I have a main pump charge issue... just not sure what the deal is.

Thanks!

If I'm understanding you correctly you're looking for check valve at incorrect location. According to parts catalog # 1539 2640 tractors with reverser are designated by the ""A"". IIRC line holding check valve will be stuck into clutch housing held by a clamp. Have you ever checked hyd stand-by pressure which should be 2250 psi?

. Try tractor operation worth the rockshaft in the lowest position . Also try the load and draft adjustment in both D and L .

Well, I bought the correct seat, guide, ball and spring but as you can see in the picture, it doesnt fit. I am baffled as to what keeps the hydraulic fluid from leaking off on this particular set up. Ive searched the internet and manuals high and low but cant get a definitive answer. Maybe the pictures will help!!

I agree, my line looks like this, but if you’ll look closely the part
numbers for reverser and no reverser tractors are identical in
respect to the guide, seat, ball and spring.

So for this particular setup, do you think that the reservoir tank above the main pump is what is supposed to prime the pump upon
startup?

Technically the oil reservoir by radiator was designed to hold excess oil that frt pump didn't require during normal operation BUT if an internal hyd leak reared it's ugly head this excess oil could rapidly disappear. Then a hyd function such as FEL can easily cause frt pump to run out of oil & cause cavitation.

Problem Fixed!! The valve located at the top of the reservoir tank had a little bit of trash in it. Cleaned it out and now the
hydraulics work flawlessly every time. No more chatter!
