heating ground

I built my burn pile over my seepage bed, it is supposed to rain all week.

How far down do you think the heat will go?

According to my atomic calculator, if it rains 2.1784 inches, your temperature will rise by 4.2694 degrees. My calculations have variance of .14736 degrees.

Stick a fork in it and feel the fork (not on your tongue) if hot, dig a little and stick a fork in it. still hot, dig deeper. Much depends on the computational thermodynamics algorithm you use, coupled with the conductivity of the soil when saturated, and the intensity of the combustion coupled with the pulsed nature of the combustion you intend. This is actually a partial answer because we do not know in advance the rate of decay of organic matter in the soil, or the ambient temperature, wind speed, or flow rate of the water through the soil. Depending on how big and how long the fire burns the heat might go down six or eight inches. Heat rises and dirt insulates very well.
