What gasket material to use?

My gas mf65 steering housing is leaking oil & was wondering what gasket to use. Am I better off to use permatex? I used some of Napa material, but leaked. That steering housing gasket is not available anymore.

Make your own gasket, very easy to do, do a Google search and you'll see all sorts of videos, etc. A new gasket with Permatex (non-hardening) should do the trick. Don't be in a hurry to reassemble after putting the Permatex on the metal and gasket surfaces, wait a few hours overnight if you want before putting everything back together, it will thicken up a wee bit overnight but still be tacky and good to go.

When you put the side cover on, did you back the adjusting screw out some?

If not, it may be holding the cover away from the housing.

Also check the cover for flat. If the screw was over tightened or the cover was tightened down on a thick gasket, it may have warped the sealing surface.

You can lap it on a piece of sand paper on a flat surface, like a piece of glass.

I would use a thin paper gasket with sealer, Pernmatex or similar.

Many of the old steering gears are prone to leak oil. Cornhead grease is sometimes preferred, it is a simi-fluid grease, thin enough not to channel away from gears, but thick enough not to leak.
