What is the engine rpm for a PTO rpm of 540.

Well since it doesn't have a tack you have it at around 3/4 throttle for the magic number of 540. And yes that 540 RPM is just a ball park number and on most things you just need to be in that ball park

Old is correct. that is also about where they produce the most horse power if the throttle is wide open, and the load is applied to bring it down in RPM to that number. Mostly running wide open is OK unless the governor has been tweaked for excess RPM. Jim

Thanks for the info. Amoung other things, I pull a 48" finish mower with the tractor and was wondering what the best engine setting would be for that service.

For a finish mower pretty much the faster the blades spin the better it cuts so full throttle will be good

hose engines can run wide open throttle all day every day until the oil companies stop making gasoline.
