Help on old Jeep

MY son's Jeep Wrangler has sat in the barn for about 16 years, now he wants to get it going and restore it. I got a battery for it and I think we can add fresh gas and it should start. The problem is that it had an external solenoid mounted on the passenger side inner fender and over the years someone took it off for another application. I remember older vehicles had the solenoid on the inner fender. It requires a 4 terminal solenoid. Batt , starter, then two small wires which I assume come from the ignition switch..where do these wires go on that solenoid ? Thanks for any help.

I'm guessing you can figure out the 2 bigger one. The smaller ones are likely to be a ballast resister by pass and the other the start wire which will be hot in the key start position. Easy way to test is check which wire has 12 plus volts on it in the start position when not hooked to the solenoid

Large terminals are battery plus and starter. The two smaller terminals are usually marked I for ignition and S for starter. When you turn the ignition switch to start a positive voltage is applied to the S terminal and energizes the solenoid and connects the battery to the starter winding. The I terminal connects to the positive side of the ignition coil and then goes to the run position of the starter switch.. The application may vary a bit.

I was thinking that ! The two big terminals are easy , wasn't sure of the small wires, but yes,one to activate the solenoid and one on the
ignition side of the coil Thanks

I've got a 1975 jeep. It has a solenoid like you are describing. It has a 10 gauge wire tied into the wire coming from the battery which goes to the ignition switch to supply power for the switch. Then it has a 12 ga wire coming from the ignition switch to the S on the solenoid. The I terminal is wired to the positive side of the coil.

AMC used a 3-wire version of that solenoid on early electronic ignition systems. If I recall correctly, the earlier bypass-ballast-resistor was eliminated. I don't recall when AMC bought Jeep from Kaiser, but I'm pretty sure that some of the AMC Jeep vehicles used the same Prestolite ignition systems.

(quoted from post at 10:39:59 09/02/20) Why not do a Google search for a wiring diagram for your Jeep .... here's one for example for my Jeep (well, mine is a 91 while this is for an 89 but I suspect they are the same).
89 Jeep YJ Wrangler wiring ....
ah! Too easy to come to this forum and get a "guess" from someone. :(
