this may sound stupid but i work on all kinds of cars. i bought a 1958 international 340 utility tractor gas engine done a little to it been using it. one it overheated on me so while i was digging around i found the thermostat up in the hose. i put it back in just like i would with a car. but i seem to keep having problems now. i put it back in with the arch up toward the radiator. runs find for a while but then overheats again. i tested stat in boiling water to see if it worked and it did. how does it go in. i liiked at my manual it looks like the stat goes in arch down. can anyone help me please. thanks steve

The sensor bulb, the part the stem extends out of to open the thermostat goes toward the head.

If there is not already a v notch in the disc, or a small hole, 1/16" in the disc or the seat, it helps to drill one.

It needs a small bypass to vent trapped air behind the thermostat.

Hello fast3254,

You said it opens, but at what temperature? It should be fully open no more then 10 degrees of the thermostat temperature markings,

Guido.

That thermostat is held in place with a snap ring. You may have to clean the housing so it snaps in to the groove before installing.

You say it over heats. Does it boil, or are you reading the gage. I was going through the same thing with my JD. I thought it was over heating, but it was a bad gage. Stan
