Gas wood splitter stalls on back stroke

Have a homemade gas powered log splitter, Honda 8 HP, two stage hydraulic pump. Has worked fine for years, used it this summer with no problems. Motor runs fine, extends hydraulic cylinder and splits like a champ but every 5th back stroke or so it stalls motor out. Have a 25 micron hydraulic filter on it, would clogged filter do this? Is 25 micron the correct one to use? Any other ideas that would cause the motor to stall on the back stroke? Using JD M to pull splitter to trees that have fallen in recent storms. Always amazed of the knowledge on this site.
Thank you in advance.

because of reduced active piston area on backstroke, you have less force available and I have seen a bent rod act as you describe.

Try disconnecting the control lever from the spool and rotate the spool 180 degrees, then reconnect the lever and if it works then Bobs your uncle as they say.
