My 140 is driving me crazy

I have a farmall 140,1963 year. We have converted to a 12 volt system. But now when the tractor runs for about an hour it just dies. The coil is so hot you can't put your hands on it. I bought a new coil with a built in resistor, same problem

Now the other problem is that it acts like it's starving for gas when it gets under a load. I did rebuild the carburetor before this problem started. My question is could the float setting be wrong. Good flow from the gas tank. In order to keep it barley running I have to pull the choke out. I am lost in what I need to do, any help would be greatly appreciated.

The moment it dies have a pint jar with you and jump off and remove the carb drain plug. The gas flow should fill that pint jar in less then 3 minutes and 2 is even better. If the flow is slow try removing the gas cap since the vent could be clogged and the tank is getting a vacuum in it. If all that is good then check that you have a good blue/white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more

My 300U was doing the exact same thing as your 140 with it running bad after and hour and a very hot coil.A new set of spark plugs fixed mine. My plugs were worn and needed to be replaced but I was a bit
surprised it fixed the problem. coil still run hot but tractor is running OK now. When does the tractor act like its starving for gas - after it quits running or all the time? If you check the gas flow as old
suggested and if its OK try looking for leaks in the manifold. Look for holes and loose fit at the head and carb. If no leaks then maybe something wrong in the carb, maybe some junk got in it or something not
put together correctly. Definitely check the float height.

If the fuel flow is slow, there could be trash either in the cutoff valve
under the tank, or the inline filter inside the carburetor housing where the
fuel line connects to it.

That hot coil is likely the problem. There are no coils with internal resistors. The coil windings that ignition voltage flows through is made for
full charging voltage of 14.2 to 14.7, while running. The coil should measure at, or a little over 3 ohms (disconnected) between the two small posts.
If the charging voltage is too high (like 15 volts) it can overheat. If the points are adjusted near .010" or closer, it can overheat. The points
should be at .020" on the high point of the little cam. When too close, the coil stays on too much of the time. If the coil resistance is cloae to 2
ohms, I would put a ballast resistor in the circuit. Make sure the point gap is correct. Jim

Thanks for all the help. Found that I had a blocked inlet into bowl filter, blew it out and the flow improved very much. But I messed up the bowl gasket, so off to town to get a new one. Put a resistor in line to the coil. So I'm going to give it a try when I get the bowl gasket fixed. Thanks again for everyone's help.
