Serial number

I have a 1949 G John Deere the last number on the plate is missing.
The beginning is G 3676?. How do I find my serial number?

I don't know how other than process of elimination. You will need to locate the tractors with serial numbers G 36760 through G 36769. Once you have found all those serial numbers but 1, that one should be yours.

Is the number missing because of damage to the plate or the plate is there but nothing stamped in it after the 4 digits?
 
A friend works for CAT field service. He has told stories of removing the plate and looking at the back side to read the serial number. I would photo the plate on the tractor prior to removal.

Sure, but Cat stamped the serial number on the engine and then installed a plate with the same number over the stamped number.
