Hydraulic system

This Spring the cylinder on my planter would not hold its position while hooked to the tractor. The planter would slowly leak down if it was left in the raised position. It probably took 10-15 minutes for it to go from full up to resting on the ground.

I notice now that it is parked with no pressure on it that the couplers are leaking.

So the question is, when operating the cylinder does the system rely on those coupler balls having a good seat to maintain a steady position.

No, the balls do not maintain the cylinder positions when connected. Holding position is a function of the cylinder packings not leaking (internal or external) and/or no leakage within the control valve. The balls of the couplers seal the lines to stop leakage when the lines are unhooked. When connected they are pushed back into the coupler body, off the seats where you see them when looking at them uncoupled, to allow oil to flow by them.

Hook it up to the tractor and lift it up. Then before it falls down again unhook the hoses and see if it still falls but that test only works if the coupler does not leak. It could be either the tractor of the cylinder that is the problem
