Identify a bee

Can anyone identify this bee; wasp; hornet; stinging bug.
Second one I have found in my house in past week.
They are huge; much bigger than a yellow jacket.

Looks to be a hornet. Since your finding them in the house look around the soffit to see if they are going into the attic. Might have established a nest up there.

You've got a hornet there. We find a couple nests in the orchard every year despite spraying insecticides constantly for insects. They're a feisty bunch of insects that won't let go and with normal frequent spraying for peach and apple pests it will still not eliminate them. Shows how some insects can survive our regular sprays schedule which is regulated by the label and the state & federal government and will not kill ALL insects. I can tell you,- hornets are persistent once they build their nests.

As others have said, definitely a hornet.

What I find interesting is, as long as we don't find the nest, hornets around here are actually quit calm. It's the yellow jackets that we gotta watch out for!

Thanks Steve.
After looking at several pictures cicada killer is definitely it.
That makes it a wasp. Not a hornet.
The description also fits because both I have seen were very non aggressive.
Neither one tried to chase or sting me when I went after them and missed.

Yup, European giant cicada killer. I ID'd them two weeks ago when I found two at church. I am pretty sure that I got them both. I don't need them multiplying around here.

Found this one on a walk around the neighborhood with the wife, found a cicada on the next corner.

They're all Hymenoptera. That should offend just about everyone.

Ogden Nash:

The wasp and all his numerous family
I look upon as a major calamity.
He throws open his nest with prodigality,
But I distrust his waspitality.

that is a cicada killer wasp, grew up with them around when I was little, also today, they dig in the ground, small mound, they look for locus to kill, and lay eggs inside of them, you must be getting ready for a locus swarm. we have tarantula hawks, here in Texas too. those killer wasps, I have heard that if they sting you on the head 3 times you could die, being a little kid , years ago , we would put fruit jars over the hole and trap them when they came out of their hole, they were always very mad at us kids.

Hymenoptera

Now there is the word I was looking for.
Maybe using it will not offend some of these people as it includes the entire bee/wasp/hornet family.
Maybe with the help of others I can someday be perfect in every way and will not have to worry about offending anyone.

Yes John, Old is constantly trying to help us to be better.

Their LOUD buzz will get your attention real fast. They aren’t aggressive against people unless you
make ‘em mad.

I seen one yesterday and was telling my kids how I trapped them in moms jelly jars! Lots of cicadas coming out around here the last few weeks.
