grass hoppers in grain

A picture on the combine board of grass hoppers on a wheat bin reminded me of when I was working in a feed mill in the early 70's we bought and stored wheat for a local flour mill. Went out shortly after the bin was full and it was crawling with grass hoppers. We poured on some kind of red pesticide, covered the bin with plastic for 3 days, let it air out for a week and it was ready to go to the mill for flour. Pesticides in those days could kill a horse so I know we got all the bugs. I doubt all the residue was gone when the flour was ground and there was no way to get out 100% of the dead insect parts. Probably what we did isn't legal today but it was in those days. I'm amazed on how bugs can survive going through a combine.

Diatomeceous earth will kill all insects in grain and is non toxic. Any dead bugs are then screened out and the grain is clean and fit for consumption.
