Mommy tie my shoes

These words were probably heard in our house around 1946 by me. Very fast fore ward to 2020, again I can't tie my shoes. I can, but it is easier to remove my shoe, tie it and slip my foot back in. For my dress shoes I use a long shoe horn. Don't laugh some of you are probably going to face that in a few years. A couple new knee joints could probably fix that problem, but I don't know if I want to go through that. Any of you having that problem? Getting on my tractor, and operating it doesn't seam to be a problem. Stan

Just get slip-on shoes, problem solved (with a long handled shoe horn). I can't wear lace up shoes, due to a problem with one foot, so I haven't had any lace up shoes for 25 years, at least.

I can tie my shoes... but much prefer flip flops. :)

My dad also used the long shoehorn. Also had a pair of long handled grippers to set the shoes in place. In later years he went to Velcro closures... could put them on, then use the long grippers to close the Velcro.

The shoes with velpro are easier to do, I have mine so I can slide the on and off without undoing or redoing them!!! I don’t have bad knee problems but almost everyone that I’ve talked to that have had knee surgery got along great and no problems, only regret is why they put it off as long as they did, surgery less painful then putting up with the bad knees!!!

I'll let you about knee replacement soon. I have pre-op tomorrow and the 27th I'll have a new knee in the afternoon. From what I've been told, tough first week, after that it's all down hill.

I can identify!! After I retired I only wore my good boots to church or dancing. rest of the time I wore hiking boots or Wolverine laceups that I could open up the tongue area. I wore my good black Tony Llama bullhides to my FIL's funeral. All day affair. i didn't think I was ever going to get then off. My Merrell hikers are always tied.

So it's not just me whose feet are getting further and further from his hands. It's either slip ons or Velcro for me.

It's the same with hips. The right one has been done and I can reach that foot. The left one is overdue, and dealing with that sock/shoe is a bugger.

Somehow at this stage of the game, I don't think your mommy would have much better luck tying your shoes than you are, and if you call your wife mommy, you're likely to get clobbered upside the head with a cast iron pan.

So, I think you're on your own in tying your shoes, or finding alternatives.

Most of the guys I know who have had knee replacements claim it's like night and day. They hurt less immediately after the operation than they did before, even without painkillers.

New knees might not be the answer unless you can get full knee rotation back after the therapy is done. A stiff old body with a grouchy back compounds the issue. I use a long shoe horn all the time, in fact several times a day. I take my shoes off every time I come in the house so the shoe horn stays polished.

I am blessed with the highest arches my podiatrist has ever seen so slip on shoes and boots do not work well for me. Only lace shoes that I can spread open good and far will do. Pulling socks on is a real morning challenge too when the arthritic fingers are screaming at me. It helps to use a pliers to grab the back of the shoe to pull it on but that is not the best for the shoe. But it could be worse.

Had back surgery a few months ago ( again ). Can’t hardly stand wearing anything but an oversized tennis shoe and sweat pants. A belt really hurts my back. I can still put the shoes on , but it hurts pretty bad to wear any other shoe. I like the tennis shoes with velcro fasteners. You might try them yourself.

I use a long shoe horn to help push off my 5 buckle boots. I was in my mid 40's when I got married, my wife thought it was a funny looking shoe horn. It is actually a tire iron. Never once have I bent or broke it, but I have pushed through a worn out heel on my boots a time or two.

Since getting a new hip 02/03/20 I do keep my tennis shoes tied and slip them on. I use a gripper to hold the tongue. I was told not to bend over 90 degrees or I might pop it out ( I do not want to do that). I do have a pair of work shoes with velcroe straps. The velcro like to fill up with grass and other debris and it is hard to get the shoes very tight.

New knee? Did the left one 23 Dec 2019. The pain changed and at least it no longer locks up. Right one on the calendar for about the 1st of Mar 2021. Seems once you have an pulmonary embolism from cancer they kinda get gun shy about doing them both at the same time.
Cowards.

Wayne, we have one of the best knee replacement doctors in the country. I had a second hernia surgery last year and the knee replacement guy and I went to the operating rooms at the same time. I came out in 70 mins. and the knee guy came out in 60 mins. It is amazing how far the replacement surgery has come. People come from out of state for this Dr. Wishing you all the best.

Tie your shoes? Piece of cake(pie) compared to compression knee high socks. I have a harder time takeing them off, than putting them on. On the other hand I have worn only wellington slip on boots last 40+ years. joe

Those compression socks are a real honey to get on arent they? One will go on real slick and the other will be nothing but wrinkles. I had to put them on Marilyn every day for a few weeks twice, one for each hip surgery. Then it was Marilyns turn to put them on me for awhile after knee surgery.

Having two replacement knees and one hip, it is hard to understand why anyone would be enduring pain and poor range of motion and be saying that they "don't want to go through that". All three procedures were incidental.

I was starting to have trouble getting my socks on so I started stretching each morning. Helps more than I thought it would.

I never have been very flexible. Never could sit Indian style or kneel very long.
When I was about 40 I did something to my back. I think its sciatica but doctors said no and they pushed me through as it was workers comp. I still have pain in my back hip area and it always feels like I have a tight shoe on even if I have nothing on. This has been going on about 12 years. I can still tie my shoes most of the time but usually leave them loose. I have been wearing slip on tennis shoes with elastic laces. I keep meaning to find elastic laces for my boots. Getting my socks on is getting to be a challenge though. Sadly when I was younger I wore my socks to bed as I always had cold feet. Now i cant stand wearing them to bed but it's hard to get them on.

Dieseltech, same here. Motorcycle accident in 86. Broken femur, in traction for 6 weeks. Left knee is nearly fused straight. Almost no mobility. Need to step up for surgery. Looking at titanium "bearing caps," instead of the usual sawing out and total replacement. A lot of advancements have been made in technology.
