i need to know what kind of fluid to use in my 1948 farmall cub in the lift on back is it hydrolic fluid or oil we live in tennessee

CaseIH brand Hytran is the recommended hydraulic fluid. Any non IH branded oil must meet the Hytran or IH specification. Definitely not the word of the floor
person saying "this is the stuff you need right here" That is a bad idea. Universal tractor fluid can meet the specification, but only if it is labeled as
such. This is important in that the specification is a high standard for corrosion resistance, anti foaming, detergent action, water suspension, and EP (extreme
Pressure) gear lubrication. Jim

My 48 Cubs operator's manual tells me to
use 30W non-detergent oil in the
hydraulics. That manual was printed way
before the invention of modern hydraulic
fluids like IH Hytran. If you want to
spend the $$$ for the expensive stuff
that hadn't even been designed at the
time the Cub was built, go for it. I my
opinion, what was fine for it in 1948
should be good enough today.

jal-SD I agree with you that the 30w oil that was recommended would be perfectly fine. But the TSC brand hydraulic oil that I use that is compatible with HyTran is $30-40 for 5 gallons which works out to $1.5-$2/qt. Smaller quantities would be more/qt. I would think that would be as cheap as any 30w out there.
