Setting valves on a Honda 420

I replaced the rings on my 420,now I need to adjust the
valves.what I need to know is at which stroke at TDC do I
adjust each valve?

what is a honda 420 ? info on the engine is needed. when you are on TDC on COMPRESSION you can adjust those valves and follow the firing order doing the rest the same . no idea what machine what u are referring to though.

I just turn the engine through with the proper feeler gauge in the gap.

Keep turning it and feeling for the loosest point, lock them down.

After starting and running it up to temperature, let it cool and recheck the gap.

When I google Honda 420 I come up with an ATV, is that what your talking about? We have a couple of older Honda ATV's, I pretty much set the valves like Steve suggested. If the engine has an automatic decompression feature like many lawn mowers do then it's a little different. Have you tried googling for a video on how to do it? I have usually been able to find a video, but you have to sort through them, some are pretty incoherent!

Hello rrman61,

Take the spark plug out, then use a long screwdriver to feel when the piston is coming up on the compression stoke. Then advance the engine so that the piston is on its way down 1/4" from TDC

This assures that the compression release is out of the way. Then adjust the valves to their proper gap.
If you have a choice of gap, as .004 t0 .006 use a .005 feeler gauge the set the valve.

That way you are sure to be in the specs, and wont have to worry if the setting is a little loose or a little tight.

Honda 420 is an atv it has one cylinder.two questions:when the intake valve is moving up and down,is that the compression stroke?and I assume I set the exhaust valve at the same time or do I set it at exhaust stroke?this is the first single cylinder overhaul I do so even if these might seem like dumb questions I have to ask them.

Oh and what is the easiest way to rotate the crank?can I put it in gear and turn a tire to do this?

Ours have a back up pull-rope starter, that's what I use. Turning a tire when in gear won't turn the engine, the clutch is centrifugal. I you don't have a rope starter then you need to access the end of the crankshaft. Be careful sticking something down in the spark plug hole, you could scratch the cylinder wall, I would use a wood dowel. It sounds like you need some help!

Hello rrman61

Yes you adjust both at the same time, because both valves are closed on the power stroke,

Guido.
