My cousin sent these pictures. Big hay crop this year.

May I ask the reasoning for outside stacking rd bales with the flat side down?? I would think that even the smallest amount of moisture falling from the sky would soak in easier on flat side vs rd side.

I had a neighbor that stacked one cutting of hay similar to the photo but only once!

Jim, on most of my ground this year if you stacked dry hale bales flat side down, the ground would suck more moisture out of the hay as it sat there, LOL.

Your cousin mustve had a big hay crop last year too judging by the look of a couple of those rolls in the first picture---the way they are flat on one side and moisture stained Im guessing they are left overs from 2019. As to the stacking methodology, I could never do that where I live but im sure your cousin knows what works for him.

I am not familiar with round bales. Are you saying with round side up the rain will run off them like a tin roof? To me it seams like it would all soak in no matter which side is up.

You do lose some hay on the outside, but for the most part they'll shed the water off if stored like a barrel laying on its side. How much is lost depends on how tight the bales are and twine vs net wrap.
