Next years crop plan

I usually do one row crop a year as it is easier to manage. I did corn this year, so far weather has been perfect, so crop looks good. I have been busy at work last few years and thistles have got hold. I can hit them good with 24D this year, and next year too if I go corn on corn, so I am thinking I will do that.

I might try to put a cover crop on this fall, depending on how early winter sets in. I usually no till, but think I will do tillage in the spring, as the neighbor did corn on corn no till and had a lot of planting problems. I am also putting in tile on my home place this fall.

Cover crops are hit and miss here, depends on how early winter comes.

Did he chop the stalks. We try to run the middles. Never have a problem. But you can't have 4 inches of chopped up matt to plant thru. But we do have spike trash wheels moving trash away from the unit.

I dont have any trouble planting no till beans into standing corn stalks. I have shark tooth Floating row cleaners With air cylinders on them. It works great cleaning the row but sometimes trash falls back over the row After the seed goes in the ground or the ever present Iowa wind blows trash back over the row later. The trash over the row keeps the ground cool so the beans are slower to come up in those places. It does not seem to bother beans much to have uneven emergence but corn is a different story. This is where no till corn on corn runs into trouble. The later emerging corn plants that were under the trash will be the runt pig for the rest of the season. The neighbors field across the fence from me has been continuous no till corn for at least the last five years. The first month after it is planted the field looks as uneven and sick as any field can be. This cannot be good for yield in the fall. It looks good now after the plants are all even height but the damage is done. As much as I like no till it looks like continuous corn still needs to be turned black or nearly black every year. Here farther west in Iowa cover crops are still hit and miss too.

If you have thistles look into dicamba RR2x tend beans or my favorite is E3( RR, liberty and Enlist)

Thistles die here with a late spraying of Roundup if you do a traited seed? Thry are hard to get rid of in one year, but a couple years if you can spray them late in beans it will knock them down in a couple of years. A key is spraying them late.

Up here in my part of minnesota we don’t have time for covers after corn or beans.

We are wet and cold in my area, so pretty much all tillage. Especially corn on corn needs fall tillage, aggressive tillage, to work well year in and year out.

cover crops are hit and miss? Not understanding that. here in Nebraska they can be planted in january, what keeps the cover crops in your area from being planted?

Neighbor had cover crop planted by airplane. My dog and I walk those fields after harvest. Hard to see any cover except down in the low spots. He indicated he is not going to do it again, this year anyway. I believe some of that cover crop expense was covered by the USDA. Looked like a waste of my tax dollar. But a lot of the USDA budget is in my opinion. gobble

I drill alfalfa in December but it doesn’t do anything until the middle of April Most times don’t know how much good it would do for a cover crop to start that late maybe it would

I agree. I've been using roundup/liberty corn and beans for a few years. When sprayed properly there isnt a weed that will survive

I had issues with thistles on the end of a large grass waterway. I kept them clipped so they couldn't put out a bulb. Two years of this and they were gone. I know this doesn't work for most farmers but the location, made it possible to work for me
