MF 35 backhoe starter help again!

I took off old starter tested and ordered a new one. When I got the new starter it bolted right on but on my old starter I had a place for battery cable but also a post labeled S and one labeled R. My new starter had a place for battery cable and just a post for S. How do I wire the new starter? Any help would be great

S post is starter activating voltage from the start switch.

R is resistor bypass for the ignition. Sounds like you have a 6 volt or 12 volt external resistor required coil with added resistor. When solenoid activates the starter it sends 12 volts to bypass the resistor and give hotter starting spark. You have several options

1. Tape off the R wire from the resistor and see if you get satisfactory starting without the bypass.
2. Exchange your new starter for one with R terminal
3. Swap the new starter solenoid for one with R terminal

A diode wired into a connection from the terminal going into the starter motor from the solenoid, and connected through that same "R" wire will do the trick. The diode should allow flow to the coil, but not back to the starter. Jim
