Something my dad said 30 years ago

My dad tried planting some prairie in the 90s', he got fed up with it after the 2nd year and plowed it under. I had two patches that I planted 3 years ago that never really came. I burnt both off this spring, and they look great. I have blue stem and flowers coming that never showed up on initial plant.

I sure miss not being able to tell him.

My 6 year old patch also got burnt, the blue stem did not come real well last year, but it is back in full force. I really think to have good prairie it should be burnt off every 3-4 years, but needs to be real thick so it is a hot burn.

Just tonight I thought of something I wanted to tell/discuss with my dad - thought he’d find interesting. He’s be dead nearly 8 years.
I think of him (and my mom) every day. Always a surprise when you catch yourself thinking you can talk to them like they are alive.
Tell him about your prairie grass anyway.
Good you are figuring out how to make it successful.

Prairie plants need fire to thrive. It is part of their ecosystem. Without the fire you end up with weedy junk plants that out compete the natives.

He is there, watching you and listening, you just have to talk to him. And if you listen, he will reply back. Thats the joy of farming lots of time to reflect and process things..

I find myself remembering things that I was told by people gone long ago, I just smile and try to remember to pass them along to the next generation..

Indian's knew that all along. They would burn off a patch of Prairie and the next year the buffalo would show up.
