Driving By Canola

Sky and sun were right for some photos today. And the Merc is always ready for some scenery viewing so we took a drive down canola road. Its an almost two mile stretch of uninterrupted canola right up beside the road. Got a few drone shots and video too. It was impressive scenery.

It looks like a fairly level field. I'm somewhat surprised because many fields seen there from a satellite view have many wet spots which would seem to translate to lots of rolling land. Is any of this some of your canola? Sure hope hail stays away.

Today's news here reported a swath of severe hail damage in west central Minnesota which is off to the northwest of where I live.

Ron, that shot is a mile and a half East of me. Part of that 17 quarter block of canola. I've got some drone video and pictures of it but left it out in the car. Maybe later if I remember.

Beautiful picture of the canola and the Merc. Impressive skies you have out there.

(quoted from post at 18:47:34 07/18/20) GREAT photo, rusty6.
Thanks. You really can't take a poor photo with tht kind of scenery to work with. I had to take a wide angle pano shot of course. Down sized a little to fit the forum.

Is that a public road? How do they keep it open in the winter with no ditches? And where does the water go when it rains? Road almost looks lower then the fields.

Looks like many of the country roads around me, in south central Kansas. Roads that the county maintains tend to have ditches, but those that the township maintains, not so much. Besides, the farmers want to farm right up to the road edge so no room for a ditch.

Yes, its municipal road but the land owner farms both sides right up to the edge where there was no ditch. After a big rain there will be some water on it in places for a while. Winter time I don't know if it is kept open or not. Its mainly one farmer that uses it.

Ron, I've mentioned before that the pictures and video have a flattening effect. It is mostly up and down driving on that road. Plenty of little sloughs out there that you can't always see when the crop gets higher. This is some video shot while driving through and flying over the crops. Did you notice the bison in two different locations?

I always thought or had heard that Bison required stronger fences than what that first herd looked like it was behind.

Its true. And that is a very strong and expensive fence. Heavy , long posts deep in the ground with heavy page wire at least six feet high. The occasional moose managed to jump over it and then could not figure how to get out. But the bison seem content to stay in the fenced area.

That ia a nice video. I especially like the drone stuff from way up. I did see the buffalos. After you reminded me of previous mention of "not so flat land" it did come back in memory. Memory is not my best suit !!
