Farmall m idles high

tell us what u have done and some history. thats pretty vague. when how when . do that before u removed carb? how as carb cleaned and what settings? could be as simple as an idle screw.

Farmalls in general (letter in particular) have a "do nothing" zone from the far position of the hand lever to about a third of the way to wide open position. If the tractor will run OK with the lever at wide open, and will slow down to some speed less then full speed, then quits running when adjusted slower, there is two possible items to work on. The first is the idle stop screw and idle richness adjustment. these are located in the top 1/2 of the carb. The Idle speed stop screw is closest to the tube from the governor, and pushes against the lever inside the connection to limit how far the throttle plate closes. The idle mixture screw is at an angle to the right of that. It is an air bleed screw, the farther out it is the leaner it gets. The idle mixture screw is adjusted so the speed (at idle) is as high as it will go, when the speed screw is adjusted to the correct idle speed. They are played against one another to achieve this best mixture at a nice slow idle (about 500 RPM)
The other issue is that it stops. if nothing woll make it run slowly, and the above screws are not doing anything, there is a plugged up idle circuit in the carb. Jim

With that new info, the tab is not in the slot where the tube fastens to the carb. Very common issue, and you need to be careful use a good light. it can be done with the carb on the tractor. Jim

The tractor idled high when I bought it so I removed the carb stayed carb cleaner through all the orfaces made sure there wasn't anything loose in the bowl and bolted it back on. After that it still idles high. I removed the vent cover for the govenor and pushed the rthreaded rod that connects to the shaft going from govenor to carb and it idles nicely but as soon as I release pressure the rpms go back up could the govenor possibly need adjusting?

I'll double check but if it wasn't in slot how would it idle down when I manually push rod down at govenor end of shaft it has to be operating the plat at the other end of the shaft

ok so someone has been in there. the slot is not in place. thats what it will do. was going to say that in the first place. but now you never know what u bought.

If you are sure the tab is in place and you still have the problem loosen the two bolts on the governor where the cross tube goes to the carb they are slotted with the engine running tap on the tube until the engine ideals down. The cross tube is not lined up with the carb creating a binding situation. Bob

Thanks for the info Bob the binding was the problem I loosened those two screws tapped thee tube up a little and it idled right down runs perfect now appreciate all the input from everyone
