I want to put a solar battery maintainer on the 12V, 800 CCA marine battery in my dump trailer which doesn't get a whole lot of use.

Looking on Amazon I see maintainers rated at 2.4, 5, 10, and 20 watts. What wattage would you recommend?

A maintainer on a battery that is not loaded with electronic draw, does not need to be much more than the self discharge rate of the battery. I would choose the 5, or 10 watt unit. Some depends on the sun exposure Shade/day, and the amount of sunny days. Jim

A lot depends on the vehicle. Some will drain the battery quickly just sitting. If it's one like that you might install a battery disconnect too. The battery maintainer wouldn't really matter on a good battery. Just 2 amps should be more than enough. They will kick off when the battery is charged.

I did what you are suggesting on my equipment trailer to maintain the battery that I use for the wench and the electric over hydraulic brakes. I used a 25 watt panel from Harbor Freight, I added a small controller to prevent over charging the battery (maybe not necessary). The trailer sits three weeks out of four and the battery is at least five years old and so far has always worked for me.

There is an extra pin on the trailer/truck connector intended for battery charging off the tow vehicle while driving, if this would work for you. RV parts suppliers have the goods to make it happen.

Thanks to the folks who answered my question on the wattage of a battery maintainer for the battery in my dump trailer.

I have plenty of space to put a maintainer and both of my trailers and tow vehicles have 7 wire plugs and receptacles with a hot wire to charge batteries when towing.
