farmall 450 P/S belt change

The old belt was a 3L44. It was riding in the bottom of the drive pulley and would slip when the steering wheel was turned any amount at all and then squeal loudly. I am replacing it with a 4L44. The problem is that the pulley and the reservoir are so close to one another that the belt can not be slipped over the pulley without damaging the belt. The pulley is held on with a bolt. I held the pulley with a vise grip and attempted to remove the bolt. The P/S unit is on the left side of the engine. Is this bolt a left hand thread? I definitely do not want to break the bolt. Is the unit designed to have the reservoir removed to replace the belt? I don't think so, but I would rather remove it than to break the bolt.

I believe they are right hand threads. The pulley is turned CW by the engine, and CW tightens a RHT. Left hand threads there would be more likely to loosen. that pulley needs some adjustment for smooth and straight any way. Jim

Regular threads with a small key on shaft. Watch that the key doesn't tip up at back when installing pulley. If you remove the reservoir from pump, may need new seal rings and oil to fill reservoir back.

That pulley should be replaced. Start with a new pulley, 1/2 inch diameter smaller. And maybe narrower to match up with the bottom pulley. Buy a shorter belt that correctly fits the bottom pulley and a new upper pulley.

The 3L44 was running in the bottom of the drive pulley that is on the crank shaft. If it was running on that pulley correctly, I would have bought the same belt and I don't think I would have needed to remove the pulley on the pump to get it on.TY

That filter is in bad shape and it should be replaced. The stud is also not allowing the lid to sit down on the reservoir properly and so it leaks past the seal.

TY. An ounce of prevention is going to be worth at least a days frustration.

That is what I thought also, but I wanted someone to verify it, before I did something I would regret later.

The bolt seems to be very tight. If I think it is going to break, I will stop and then remove the reservoir instead.

Thank you for your help. With a little harder tug I got the bolt out and the belt went on easily. His tractor now steers with one finger and without any sound effects.
