550 temp sending unit

I posted a few weeks ago about the temperature sending unit on my 550 Oliver reading hot just after starting.I got another sending unit from Agco dealer and finally took time to put it in. Started it up and let it run a while. After about 10 minutes it started climbing almost to the red. I checked hoses and block with the infra red thermometer and both were right at 100°. I have checked the guage and it works like it should. Did I get 2 bad sending units?I would replace the guage, but I'm not sure that is the problem, just seems odd to get 2 new sending units that are bad from the box. I ordered a new sending unit from this site to try that. I'm lost!!! Chris

If your charging voltage is more than 14.7 volts, that could cause high readings. Automotive gauges often have a voltage regulator that keeps it constant. (not expensive, just a little thing.) Jim

You could very well get 2 bad sending units.

Chances are they came off the same assembly line. Be nice to know what the operating ohm range of the sender is supposed to be, but finding that could be difficult.

Have you looked at a wiring diagram or parts break down to see if there is a voltage regulator on the instruments? Are there any other electric gauges, and are they also reading high? Usually if there is a regulator it will power all the gauges, and if it is bad all the gauges will read high.

Oliver guage has fuel and temperature in the same guage set. I just put a new sending unit in the gas tank, the fuel guage doesn’t seem very accurate, but I haven’t used it very much to confirm that thought.

I had a 550 and it seems there was something unusual about the temp. sending unit. The experts, in my opinion, is http://external_link.com/ . Really nice folks and very knowledgeable.

There is a Service Bulletin that lists temperature ranges and the value of senders, however it is for later tractors.   It is #430 1302 filed in GA-10-112. It is dated 9-3-85.

It being a later bulletin, however it should give you some idea of the value of your sender.
