Is there any real advantage to that 8d, 1100 cca battery, other than extra weight in front of the radiator and a $300 price tag at the mega dealer, over a regular old group 31?

Try it and tell us . There is no such thing as a battery that’s to big if it’ll fit but you could probably get by with a smaller one

If you have a NAPA store nearby, check out their website. You probably can get an similar battery for a lot less then the dealer. Order it online for in store pickup. I found 1 for my NH, same CCA’s, just a 2 inches smaller

You may discover the dealer maynot be that over priced for the same size and quality of battery .
Sure there are jobber batteries out there for less $$$.
Do the jobber batteries met or exceed the vibration resistance, CCA and amp hours of the JD battery ?

I have a generator with the same engine as the 7330 which came with a group 31. After the last 2 $300 jd batteries in my 6320 lasting about a year, I put a used group 31 in and it has lasted several years. I remember this coming up before and jd seller said he replaced more starters on tractors that had been changed to the smaller battery, so use your own descression. Personally, I don't think the jd batteries are as good as they used to be.

Here’s the one I found. $125 cheaper than the dealer.

Two Group 31-s will turn a 12L over every day for 3 years. You should be able to find Deka-s for under $100. Save the 8D-s for the off highway engines 15L and above.

When I switched to Deka from the dealer brands, I figured out it was if Deka paid me to use them. Dealer battery lasted less than a year at $73 on sale. Deka lasts 3 years (and then some) at $95. Second and third year it was like someone wrote me check when I didn't have to buy another battery or pay to swap it out.

Maybe the starters were damaged before the switch to a Group 31 and the blame fell on the smaller battery.

We have converted to the 31's for everything we can get them in. Since we had them from when I changed the batteries in the semi the other good ones left were used in tractors. 1 group 31 will start most engines alone in cold weather up to the real big diesels. We use just one on everything from the 1466 down in size. Bigger get more like 2-4 depending on what it is.

The proper battery is the highest CCA, highest amp hour and vibration resistant battery that will fit in the battery box .

Where do you find the "vibration resistance rating" for a battery? Far as I can tell you can only go by vague terms such as "heavy duty," "commercial," or "truck and tractor."

When you can pick up the $50 Walmart Special and a $150 "commercial" battery, and they look the same right down to the details in the case molding, weigh the same, and have CCA ratings within 10% of each other, it's hard to believe that the more expensive battery holds any benefit.
