John Deere no.8

A JD #5 or #8 were some of the most reliable mowers ever built, in my opinion. We had a couple of Massey Harris mowers that were very good, too. They were a chain drive between the PTO shaft and the pitman drive shart.
The driver gear was larger than the driven gear to increase the bar knife speed.

I switched mine over to the double guards and it’ll flat walk through hay I was running 6 mph the other day I could run a gear faster but I need to tighten the safety latch just a bit

Hey SV I also had a no. 5 behind an H farmall -and I cut a lot of different stuff --It did not like that real fine grass but did good in anything else - so My brother said He would fix that and switched to some off brand parts-- it was the worst thing ever -- so there is a difference !! Roy

I have a little patch that only grows about 8 inches tall but it’s super super think and I was running a dull knife and it would plug me up other than that it’ll cut thin wiry stuff and thick stuff just like hot butter
