I see that Rotella T4 15w-40 is meant for diesel motors, but could I also use it in a gas motor? I usually use 10w-30 in my gas tractor but I can get some T4 at a cheap price.

I have used diesel spec engine in all of my gasoline tractors for years.

Easier to keep only one engine oil on hand.

Diesel oil is more closely designed for the old gas engines than the new automotive "S" (spark ignition) oils.

The automotive oils are designed around roller cams and complex emissions controls, neither of which apply to your tractor.

The diesel oil is more compatible with flat tappet cams, which is what you want.

look and see what ratings it has. You should see a "C" (compression)rating which is for diesel engines and a "S" (spark)rating. If the "S" rating meets or exceeds
the rating required for your tractor you should be good. As others have mentioned the newest and latest "S"oils have charastics to preserve emission components,
catalytic convertors to be specific, at the cost of protection for camshafts and flat tappets. If the Rotella T-4 doesn't have the latest "S" rating it may be
better for your engine than the newest "S" spec oil.

Agree what others have said. Fun tib-bit.....my Harley calls for 20w-50. If on the road and need oil with no 20W-50 to be found,
Harley specifies 15w-40 diesel oil as an alternate.

Hello 550 Doug,

I have only recommend a higher viscosity oils on engines that are
burning or leaking some. Its the thicker parg of the W I worry
about. The lower number too is my concern. My reasoning is that
bearing clearances and oil thickness go hand in hand,

Guido.
