Hi. I am asking on behalf of a friend. My friend has a 1973 Case 870 diesel, non power shift. He was wondering why some 870s made had more fins on the side of the tractor by the radiator than others. His he said has 8. He also said hes heard of them having anywhere from 6-12. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not a Case guy. But maybe the powershift had more fins to cool the transmission oil. The non PS didn't need the extra cooling?. Just like IH put more fan blades on Hydros.

A very few of the first 70 series tractors had 14 fins(early 1969 production), Then they went to 10 fins for a while, then 8, by 1975 they only had 6. It had nothing to do with the powershift, just a cost saving measure.

Some of the early manual transmission tractors didn't have an oil cooler.

He's talking about the fins on the side shield and they just direct the air away from the engine and platform after it comes through the radiator. For those in the know you can tell the age by the number as they got less but larger as time went on.

This is an early model but not the first.

the Case RPS did not create any more heat than a std 8 speed dry clutch did,, running the pto steady creates far more heat than transmission gears in them
