Identify this plant

I believe these came in with a load of tan bark and are trying to take over the place. Nothing seems to kill them. Anyone know what they are and how to get rid of them.

Does it turn yellow, and then brown as it gets more mature? Looks a lot like stuff growing in my hay fields, especially in last year's oats/alfalfa.

Commonly called horsetail. An very ancient plant. Reproduces by spores( like fungi) and underground rhizomes. Prefers moist to wet locations. High rates of MCPA herbicide will greatly set it back but will not totally control it. Other herbicides are not effective. A tile drain under the infested area is the best permanent solution.

Snake Grass, I think is what a few folks call it. I plugged a 6 row corn head down close to a waterway a couple of years ago, it was so thick.

To actually kill it requires at least 4 seasons of "burn down" of the growing (exposed plant) It can also be dug up, but what is removed is still going to grow new plants unless literally burnt/heated. Repeated application is the best option. Jim

If it is Field Horsetail or Equisetum Arvense, it is very hard to kill. It reproduces by spoors and rhizomes up to 40 feet long. It's not very good for livestock, but they have to eat huge amounts for it to be a problem. Telar will kill it, it's an expensive soluble powder herbicide. 2,4,D just burns it down. Round up won't kill it. Drying the field up will help.

Thanks guys, further research shows/tells me it is horsetail. I have no experience with it but from your comments I am even more certain it came in with the tan bark. I will tr burning it.
Thanks again.

The spores travel long distances on the wind. If they land in a suitable environment they grow. Being very common, expect that if you are successful in eradicating it, it will be back!
