Posted this on the JD Forum, but thought some of you may enjoy it here.

This picture was shared on a local history Facebook page. Thought someone could name the tractor model and maybe give an estimate of the date the pic was taken.

Thanks!

To narrow it down a bit more, this B has a Fairbanks Morse RV2B magneto on it so it was built sometime between its introduction in 1935, but before serial number 24050 in late 1936 when that type of magneto was replaced on the assembly line with a WICO AP model.

As far as the picture itself, it could have been taken anytime. The guys here and on the other forum have done a good job of narrowing down when the tractor was made. Best guess for the photo would be...."sometime after that." :D

HAHA!!

Looking back, I was thinking in my mind (you wouldn't understand  ) that the tractor was probably a recent, new purchase, and the owners wanted a picture w/ their new work horse. Therefore, dating the tractor would provide an approximate time-frame for the pic. I should have stated that better in my original post.

Fantastic info warbaby!! You guys on this forum amaze me w/ your knowledge!

Thank you all for the info and the great replies!

I’m just curious if this is a long frame B. The boy standing at the front of the tractor is covering up
some details. To me it suggests long frame which could be the later part of the run? Also I can make
out a shutter control rod and handle. But I’m not sure whether that was standard or option. At any rate
it is a very neat photo of a day of farm life probably late 30’s or early 40’s.

I made contact w/ the picture owner. The best guess is the pic was taken in '42-'43 based on the estimated age of the boys.

Apparently, the tractor's farm name was "Ol' Putt-Putt".

That crooked dealer probably sold him a year-old tractor as a new one! Besides the magneto upgrade and serial number range there isnt much difference between a '36 and a '37.

Well obviously not before the tractor was new, but I think it's a bit later. Best clue is the clothes- especially the boy at the front. Wearing aviator 'helmet' and goggles- coupla decades before my time but I'd guess during/just after WWII = mid/late 40s. Possibly earlier, but only if he had some direct exposure to flying, which is doubtful.

Not every photo was 'an occasion'. Lots of what were then 'unimportant' shots just to finish off a roll of film to get it developed.
